Infamous Doors

It’s been said that there are almost twice as many doors in the world as there are people, but only a few have acquired the kind of infamy that raise goosebumps and the hair on your arms. Your own pre hung doors may not be so exciting, and that’s probably a good thing! Here are eight “Infamous Doors”.

1) 109 East Palace

Behind this nondescript door some of the greatest minds in the country met to collaborate on The Manhattan Project. The study and work they did lead to the science that created the atomic bomb and has in turn lead to the nuclear energy we use, and often fear, today.

2) The Texas Theater

These red doors became infamous on November 22, 1963 when Lee Harvey Oswald hid behind them and assassinated President John F. Kennedy.

3) Elmina Castle Door of No Return

There were years of sorrow ahead for those that passed through this door, the last stop in Africa, on the Atlantic slave trade route. Built in 1482 by the Portuguese along the Gold Coast in modern-day Elmina, Ghana.

4) Wittenberg Schlosskirche

This is the door where the Catholic priest, Martin Luther, posted his letter that later came to be known as The Ninety-Five Theses, and sparked the Protestant Reformation in Europe.

5) Jallianwala Bagh

On April 13, 1919 thousands of Indian citizens were killed by British troops after these doors were shut by General Dyer. Men, women, and children were callously killed and the outrage over their deaths spurred on the Independence Movement for India.

6) Eye of the Needle Gate

Jesus referred to the Eye of the Needle Gate in the wall around Jerusalem in his teachings on riches and the kingdom of God in Matthew chapter 19. The Needle was a very small gate, only big enough for a person, and used to admit people who were caught outside the wall after dark.

7) Hidden Door to the Annex

This bookcase hides the doorway to the Secret Annex where Anne Frank, her family, and friends hid from the Nazis from 1942 to 1944. Anne, along with over 11 million people, 6 million of them Jews, were killed during the Holocaust.

8) Watertight Door of the Titanic

This image shows the watertight doors of the Titanic being built and inspected in the shipyards of Dublin, Ireland. The watertight doors didn’t help the doomed ship.
