Repurpose your Spare Room and take if from Drab to Fab!

If you are fortunate enough to have a spare room, you might find it become a dumping ground for the odds and ends that don’t get put away. But with a little ingenuity, you can create a space that is perfect for your family's needs. As long as you have extra space, you can repurpose your spare room so that it works better for your family.

A spare room can be a fantastic space for you, and you can use it in many ways. Before you decide on what to do with your spare room, you need to figure out what the best use of the space will be.

If you rarely get out of town guests, do you really need a guest bedroom? Or if your kids are getting older, is a playroom the best use of the room?

Home Office

If you work at all from home, you may already know that you need to repurpose your spare room into a home office. Bur for those who don't work from home, they may not realize that there are many times we need office type space. There aren’t many of us who don’t need a desk, printer, and space to do some writing on occasion. A home office is a great use of your spare room, and it ensures that you can always find the printer when you or your child has a homework assignment that is due tomorrow.

With a desk, bookcase, and some shelving, your home office can be a great space for you and your family.

Home Gym

Many of us feel uncomfortable when we work out in commercial gyms. The mirrors, rules and ultra fit people make us feel self-confident, so creating your own home gym can be the perfect way to use the space and get in shape.

With a couple of pieces of exercise equipment, such as a treadmill, stationary bike, or elliptical, a few hand weights, and a yoga mat, you can get fit in the comfort of your own home.

Guest Bedroom

It’s nice to give your guests a space of their own and a guest bedroom is a way to repurpose your spare bedroom if you have guests often. The perfect guest bedroom is one that is comfortable and warm - but not so comfortable that your guests never leave.

Child's Playroom

If you’ve ever stepped on a lego brick, you know that toys should be controlled whenever possible! Nobody enjoys having their child’s lego, dolls, and miniature cars in the middle of the living room, so repurposing your spare room into a toy room is a fantastic option. It keeps the toys contained, allows you to close the door when you don’t want to look at the mess, and it keeps you children in one area where you can easily find them. You can ensure the room is free of anything that might harm your child, making the room perfect for a playroom.

Walk-in Closet

If you are a clothes lover and you find you don’t have enough room for your clothes and accessories, you can repurpose your spare room into a giant closet. With some shelves, rods, drawers, and mirrors, a giant walk-in closet can make even Monday mornings not so bad.

Art/Craft Room

Those who love creating will like the idea of an entire room for getting your creative juices flowing. Shelves and drawers keep your supplies organized, while a workbench or table provides you with the room to design your masterpieces.

Library

Although many of us are turning to e-readers and iPads for our fiction, libraries are still a fantastic use of your spare room space. If you still read paper books, bookshelves make a room feel cozy. Even if you read digitally, a comfortable space with a couch for snuggling up under a blanket with a good book is what every reader dreams of.

Multipurpose Rooms

Sometimes you need to repurpose your spare room so you can use it for more than one thing. You need a guest bedroom plus an office/library/gym. A murphy bed or futon is the perfect option for a multipurpose room. Many murphy beds fold up to look like a closed dresser, making it invisible until your next guests arrive.

Whatever you decide to do with your spare room, make sure it’s something that works for you and your family.
