When is it time to Replace your Exterior Door?
How can you tell it's time to replace your exterior door?
The first thing people see when they walk up to your home is your front door. Does it look great or is it tired and worn out? Are your heating and cooling bills way too large for the size of your home? If you answered yes to any of these questions, it may be time to replace your exterior door!
Replacing your front door is one of the easiest ways to increase the energy efficiency, and update and improve the look of your home, but how do you know when you should replace it? Here are some things to look for:
Can you see daylight when the door is closed?
If you can see any light coming from the door jam, your door needs to either be replaced or you need to install new weatherstripping. Weatherstripping is relatively simple and inexpensive to install, so you may want to try this first, especially if you like the look of your exterior door and this is the only thing wrong with it.
Does it leak air even when closed?
Energy efficiency is one the biggest reasons to install a new exterior door. The amount of hot and cold air that is lost because of an improperly sealed door is immense, and it can cost a homeowner hundreds of dollars in higher energy costs. Take control of your home’s energy and install a new front door that fits and seals properly.
Is it battered and bruised?
It’s hard to have an attractive looking home when your front door looks like it’s gone through a whirlwind. Some doors, like wood front doors, can be salvaged if you love the style, but others should be replaced. Improve the look of your exterior door by installing an alder wood door or colorful fiberglass front door and make your whole house shine.
Can it be more secure?
Doors that don’t seal properly may be a target for those with nefarious intent. If you don’t have a deadbolt, that should be first on your list (and you can buy lock sets here). If deadbolts aren’t possible with your door, change your door to one that allows deadbolts and makes your home secure.
Additionally, make sure your exterior door doesn't open to the outside. Doors that swing out have exposed hinges that are also on the outside, making them simple for people to intrude. If this describes your front door, get a new one, stat!
If your exterior doors include sliding patio doors, you may want to switch them out for more secure French doors. Sliding patio doors are extremely easy for breaking in. Upgrade to more secure doors that won't give a silent invitation to anyone who wants inside.
Is it high maintenance?
Some home maintenance isn’t that bad, but painting your front door is tedious and repetitive. If you want a colorful door but don’t want the hassle of maintaining the color every few years, you need a Sherman-Williams fiberglass front door. Standard colors include Confident Yellow, Real Red, Mandarin, Festival Green, and Surfer Blue, but Uber Doors can make your door any color you desire!
It may be time to replace your exterior door
If you are looking for a way to increase your home’s energy efficiency and curb appeal, you may want to consider why you should replace your front door. Now is the time, since cooler weather is inevitably coming. Don’t be caught with your heat escaping because of a poorly fitting front door.
